What is a Health Care Agent?

A Health Care Agent is a person one appoints in advance to make medical decisions on one's behalf in the event one is unable to make medical decisions for oneself.  The agent's authority only goes into effect when one is unable to make decisions for ones self.  This person does not have any authority unless the person they are charged with decision making for loses decision-making capacity.
